SWEAD was established in 1994. It was formed for the benefit of the poorest and most disadvantaged people, specifically poor women and children, for their socio-economic empowerment, and liberation. A group of 11 educated women from the Dalit community (India's so-called untouchable community) founded it in 1994 under the leadership of Dr. C. Jayaraj, Professor of St. Joseph's Eve College in Bangalore. It is a voluntary social action group headed by a woman. Currently, it is working in 14 villages in Bhuvanagiri Taluk of Cuddalore district, Tamil Nadu, India.
SWEAD was registered on 20/01/1994 and its Registration Number 3/94 under Tamil Nadu Societies Registration Act, 1975. It is also registered under Foreign Contribution (Regulation Act, 1976, FCRA Registration Number 076010148 dated 06/03/2000
